July 14th, 2011

A free version of World Headers Cup called Peppers Championship Headers is going to be released soon. Yes that’s right free and available to play in your web browser, here’s a teaser image of the logo.

A short update

May 31st, 2011

Well I’ve made a few tweaks and i’m planning to get something up and running for everyone to have a go at soon-ish. I’ll keep that under wraps for now. Other than that I’ve just heard some of the music that greenbank has let me use in the game and it’s sounding great! Check it out here.

So much for daily updates… Let’s try Weekly!

May 20th, 2011

Ok so the daily updates didn’t go so well … I’ll give weekly updates a try! I’ve been busy with a multitude of things that took me away from game development. I’ve helped put up a few new videos on the Abandoned Scotland page on youtube so check them out! Other than that i’ve been working to pay the bills and time has been eaten up completely. Tomorrow i’ll have my first weekend off in a long time, so the plan is to crack back into the coding and sort out some games!

Daily Goals

April 24th, 2011

I’m always telling myself i’ll do something and then never get around to doing it! So i’m going to try and set myself a new challenge, daily goals. So my goal tomorrow will be to START AND FINISH editing a video for my Abandoned Scotland youtube page. So i’ll see how long I can keep this up for and try and consistently update the blog with goals.

On the games front i’ve decided it’s time to be ruthless and remove the redundant features of World Headers Cup and strip it right back to the barebones and then update the game with additional features once it has been released. Otherwise i’ll be sitting here for the next year trying to finish the game! Also with so many game ideas i’ll never get round to executing them so we’ll see how that goes … and if I finish my goal tomorrow I might have some time to crack back into XNA!

Time.

March 6th, 2011

Time is a strange thing, when you have it you waste it and see it as a never ending thing. When you don’t have time it’s the most valuable thing in the world. Time is what I don’t have right now so i’ll be taking a break from making games, as soon as I get more time i’ll be back on it!

Should we be looking to the past for inspiration of games in the future?

February 6th, 2011

I recently bought a second hand snes, having that nostalgic feeling about several games and chatting to some colleagues i bought it on impulse. After buying it I wondered whether the games were genuinely fun or whether it was fun in terms of what was available at the time. Anyway a few days passed and eventually it arrived in all its glory. As soon as I opened it I had that feeling, you know the one you used to get as a kid when you got a new console. I turned it on and slid the Sensible Soccer cart into the slot and proceeded to play it. I’m pleased to say that the game is still AMAZING the simplicity in terms of gameplay and balance was sublime.

These days football games are all about graphics and 3d realistic interpretations of the game, back in the day developers didn’t have the luxury of being able to accurately represent the game 100% so instead focused on fun gameplay! With the explosion of indie games recently over multiple platforms phones, xbox etc… of course indie teams don’t have the luxury of massive development teams and there feels like there is a parallel with the older generations of computer games.

THEE Best Snes game

So is the way forward for indie games a look at the past? I certainly believe that most indie game developers will remember fondly games of yester year that inspired them and hope that more developers look at the past and tap into the fun that sadly doesn’t exist as much these days. I’ll certainly be purchasing some more snes games to gain some ideas and inspiration.

Pre-Xmas Screenshot Update

December 18th, 2010

It’s been a while since I’ve done an update so thought it would be worthwhile putting up some new screenshots! Still some new stuff to be added that will be kept under wraps.

Black Ops the time sink

November 16th, 2010

Call of Duty Black Ops … what a time sink, the amount of time i’ve already spent flinging care packages and chopping folk up like i’m a maniac butcher is insane and it’s only been out a week! So World Headers Cup has been put on the back burner a bit while I play. Here’s a wee video of me shooting up a whole pack of dogs:

XNA World Headers Cup Award system..

October 18th, 2010

I’ve had this in for a couple of weeks, I’ve added an award system to World Headers Cup (which actually was fairly simple), with indie games not allowed to have achievements I wanted some sort of equivalent. But along with the negatives i’m able to make any award that I want. Have you got any ideas for awards? Would love to hear them.

I’ve also added a “Hand of God” to the game so that the hand knocks the ball back into play when nearing the left and right edges of the screen, i’m still playing about with how they will work.
Other areas of the game i’ve been working on are:

*Tournament Mode – Basic knockout cup mode.
*Versus Mode – 2 player mode.
*Career Mode – A League mode where you can keep playing to win the ultimate headers league.

Hopefully I’ll get most of this stuff in over the next month then I can fire it into playtest!
